Special Species is the service that provides both wellness and sick care to all companion special species such as small mammals (hamsters, rabbits, hedgehogs, etc), reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish.
We are starting to do more clinical studies to help us understand the unique needs of these diverse animals.
*NEW 5/1/25 – Hedgehogs receiving end of life care
This study examines the normal gastrointestinal (GI) anatomy of hedgehogs.
We have a poor understanding of normal anatomy of the hedgehog GI tract which makes it hard to diagnose GI diseases in sick pet hedgehogs, particularly on x-rays. These studies will teach us more about pet hedgehogs, so veterinarians are better equipped to treat this awesome species!
Patients enrolled in this study will undergo tissue sample collection following euthanasia. There are no fees to you.
For more information about the study, please contact Dr. Grayson Doss at gdoss@wisc.edu or 608-890-2713
Wobbly Hedgehog Study
We are looking for hedgehogs that may have wobbly hedgehog syndrome and are considering end of life treatment.
Please help us understand this disease by participating in our clinical study!
