*NEW - Healthy Adult American Quarter Horses
Our cardiology team is looking for healthy, purebred, American Quarter Horses that are 4 years or older to establish normal heart measurements on an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound).
We can enroll horses that come to UW Veterinary Care for routine care or for the study. We can travel depending on the distance and number of horses eligible to participate.
There is no charge to participate and you will receive the results of the echocardiogram as a benefit of the study. We estimate it will take 30-45 minutes to do a physical exam, weight check, and heart evaluation. Your horse will need to be willing to stand and be handled and have ultrasound gel and mild pressure applied to the chest.
We will be enrolling 40-60 horses and hope to complete enrollment by the end of August 2025.

*NEW - Studying response to sedation options for elective procedures
We are enrolling any healthy horse undergoing general anesthesia for elective surgery to compare the effects of oral trazodone as part of the anesthetic protocol. This study will help understand the effect of oral trazodone and make general anesthesia safer for horses in the future. There are 3 different treatment groups, including a placebo group. Your horse will be randomly assigned to one group.
Your participation is voluntary and there is no cost to enroll. You will receive a $100 credit off your bill and up to 2 additional nights of stall boarding in the hospital, if needed.
