Responsibilities
Dr. Merkatoris is involved in the clinical instruction of senior veterinary students in large animal surgery and the training of resident and intern veterinarians in the specialty of large animal surgery. He is the course coordinator of two laboratory-based courses offering livestock medicine and surgery experience that are available for junior and senior veterinary students. Lecture responsibilities include the first through third years of the veterinary curriculum, mostly on topics related to surgery of the large animal patient. Outside the veterinary curriculum, Dr. Merkatoris enjoys providing continuing education for veterinary practitioners.
Clinical Interests
While Dr. Merkatoris is interested in all aspects of large animal surgery, his particular clinical interests include the surgical care of livestock species and orthopedic procedures in all large animal species.
Graduate Training
Dr. Merkatoris earned his undergraduate (BS- Animal Science) and doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM) degrees from UW- Madison is 2012 and 2016, respectively. Following completion of a one-year private practice internship in large animal medicine and surgery, he proceeded to a residency in large animal surgery at Iowa State University. He became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in the specialy of large animal surgery in 2023.
