As the only veterinary medical hospital in Wisconsin with a licensed pharmacy, you can count on UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) to expertly counsel you on the best medication for your pet’s condition. The UWVC Pharmacy fills prescriptions for clients of the hospital, including inpatient and outpatient orders for all small and large animal patients. Please note that we are only allowed to fill prescriptions written by UWVC veterinarians.
Service highlights include the following:
- Six pharmacy technicians;
- Four pharmacists and a veterinary pharmacy resident with access to the latest advancements and treatment approaches who can answer medication-related questions; and
- Compound individualized formulations for specialized flavoring, concentrations, or other variations to make medication administration easier.
What Clients Can Expect
As part of the UWVC team approach, our pharmacy staff works closely with our veterinarians to ensure a comprehensive treatment plan that will get your animal back to health as quickly as possible.
The pharmacy can be very busy. Prescriptions are filled in the order that they are received, with priority given to critically ill patients.
Refills
Refills for food and most medications should be called in at least one business day before pickup. You may also place your request online. If the medication has no refills (indicated on the bottom-left of the prescription label), needs to be compounded, or must be specially ordered for your pet, the request should be made several days before the medication is needed.
Shipping information
Effective Monday, June 15, 2020 shipping prices will increase to:
$15 standard UPS shipping, typically 2-4 business day turnaround
$18 expedited UPS shipping, typically next-day delivery
$20-$30 insulated box, depending on size
During fall and winter months, UWVC Pharmacy cannot send liquid medications when temperatures fall below 20 degrees due to risk of freezing. Delays in shipment of these items can be expected. Should you choose to ship liquids in colder temperatures, UWVC will not be held liable for the state the medications arrive in, and neither refunds nor replacements will be issued for that shipment. Please request liquid medication refills early during the winter months.
If a new prescription is needed or an item needs to be ordered/compounded, shipping may be delayed. Please note we are only licensed to ship to Wisconsin and Illinois. (No controlled substances may be shipped to IL). Payment is expected at the time of shipment.
How to get your prescription transferred to a local pharmacy
Call the pharmacy that you'd like to fill your prescription at and make sure that they carry the item. You may want to get a price estimate if possible at this time, as well. Ask them to call UWVC pharmacy for the prescription transfer. The direct pharmacy phone number to be used is (608) 263-9950.
*Note, if the medication is a veterinary-only medication, a human pharmacy likely will not carry it. Costco and Walmart may carry certain veterinary medicines, otherwise you could check with your local vet clinic.
Returns
In accordance with Wisconsin law, once medications or medical supplies dispensed by pharmacy leave the building, they will no longer be returned and credited, even if the medication or item is sealed and in its original packaging.
