Small Animal Internal Medicine Service

The Small Animal Internal Medicine service sees dogs and cats with diseases of the liver, pancreas, thyroid, adrenals, intestinal tract, kidneys and bladder, and immune system. Cases are seen on a referral only basis, following an initial evaluation by the pet's primary care veterinarian.

Highlights of the Service

The Small Animal Internal Medicine service has 5 veterinarians that are board certified in the specialty of Small Animal Internal Medicine.

The Small Animal Internal Medicine service also offers a fax-based consultation service (to veterinarians only) to provide second opinions on the management of complicated or difficult internal medicine cases.

Common Conditions

• Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
• Hepatitis and other liver disorders
• Pancreatitis
• Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism; overactive adrenal gland)
• Intestinal malabsorption
• Kidney failure
• Hemolytic anemia (immune attack on the red blood cells)
• Immune thrombocytopenia (immune attack on the platelets)

Special Equipment and Procedures

Students keep an eye on the monitor while internal medicine resident, Laura Lee Sartor, manipulates an endoscope into the stomach of an anesthetized cat.

• Endoscopy of the stomach, small intestines, and colon
• Rhinoscopy and CT scanning of the nasal passages
• Bronchoscopy of the trachea and lungs
• Nonsurgical removal of foreign bodies in the esophagus and stomach
• Ultrasound guided biopsies of the liver, kidneys, abdominal lymph nodes, and other organs.
• Radioiodine treatment of hyperthyroidism
• Noninvasive technetium scans to evaluate liver and kidney function
• 24 hour critical care management including: blood and plasma transfusions, continuous ECG monitoring, oxygen therapy, and intravenous nutrition
