Persistent skin and ear problems can be difficult to diagnose. The UW-Madison, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital offers the services of board certified veterinary dermatologists with access to specialized testing (such as intradermal testing for allergies) that is not available in most private practices.

Dr. DeBoer uses a TV monitor connected to a microscope to show details of dermatology skin scrapings to veterinary students.
- Board certified dermatology experts.
There are only approximately 120 certified veterinary dermatology specialists in the U.S., and most are located in California and southern states. Many states have none.
When ear problems don’t respond to routine treatment, a closer look is needed. Is the problem due to an infection? Or possibly a tumor? Generally, the doctors need to take a look at the middle ear to determine what’s going on, and that can only be done by CT scan.
Initial evaluation ranges from $150-250. If allergy testing is necessary, you can expect additional costs of $85-250, depending on the type of tests necessary. Severe ear disease that requires extensive testing, CT scan, and medical treatment will cost approximately $700, plus the cost of necessary medications and recheck examinations.
Appointments are available Monday through Thursday of most weeks. Due to high demand, there may be as much as a 3 to 6 week wait for new patient appointments. If you believe your pet needs to be seen sooner, please ask to be put on the cancellation list for an earlier appointment; in many cases we can accommodate your request.
You do not need a veterinary referral to make an appointment. When you make an appointment, you will receive a 3 page welcome letter and patient history form by mail. It is important to fill out this form in advance. Please bring it with you to the appointment.
