Gross Pathology
Necropsy (autopsy): The post-mortem evaluation is performed on animals that
die while under the care of veterinarians in the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital. This procedure is performed only with the consent of the owner.
Necropsy evaluation is desirable for the following reasons:
- It is an
opportunity for students to learn about the effects of both the disease and the
treatment on the body as a whole.
- It is an opportunity to document the
accuracy of the diagnosis, the extent of disease, the effects of treatment,
and/or the cause of death.
- It is an opportunity to study the natural history
of disease states and the progression of spontaneous disease.
