Board Certified: Though each specialty has its own specific requirements, in general, board certification requires a veterinarian to spend at least two to three years (sometimes more) immersed in that specialty field under the supervision of a current expert. Following the practical experience, the candidate must pass a stringent examination. Some specialties also require the veterinarian to pass a practical examination or to publish a paper. Only after a candidate has successfully completed all the requirements, can that individual become board certified in the chosen field.
